Upon the death of his father, Jean-Paul Valley, a student, learns that he has been genetically modified and trained since birth by a secret society known as the Order of Saint Dumas.
His psychological conditioning is then activated, forcing him to become their elite enforcer, Azrael. During a mission in Gotham City, Azrael encounters Batman and turns against the Order to join the Dark Knight.
Later, when Bruce Wayne is paralyzed by Bane, he asks Jean-Paul to become Batman for a time. Jean-Paul then launches a brutal campaign of justice against the criminals of Gotham City and creates his own Batman armor.
