In Monumental, each player controls a civilization that evolves through their city: a 3x3 grid of cards (from the player's initial civilization deck) where each card can be activated to collect various resources such as Science, Army, Production, Culture, and Gold, enabling many different actions. But beware: it is impossible to activate all your cards simultaneously. You will have to make tough choices each turn to select the most useful cards.
The resources collected through activated city cards allow players to acquire cards from a common pool, giving them access to upgraded buildings, technologies, wonders, and more, thereby optimizing their civilization deck with increasingly effective card combinations. As the common pool progresses (through card acquisition or the absence of cards—one card is discarded each turn), the game moves through different eras. Medieval cards are more powerful than classic cards, and industrial cards are even stronger, but of course, they become increasingly costly to acquire.
A modular board placed at the center of the table hosts each civilization’s army. This board is made up of provinces to conquer. The inhabitants of unoccupied provinces are barbarians who will provide resources to the player who defeats them. Owning a conquered province also grants victory points.
The player whose civilization is the most impressive at the end of the game will enter legend (and win the game!).
